How To Write Beautiful Letters
✍️ What Can You Write in a Legacy Letter?
Your Legacy Letter doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to be you. Whether it’s a few words of comfort, a long story, or a treasured piece of advice, your message will mean everything to the person receiving it.
Here are some ideas, prompts, and examples to help you get started:
💖 For a Child or Teen
You might write about what you hope they know when they turn 18, share your favorite memories of their childhood, or offer guidance for when you're no longer there to say it out loud. This is your chance to remind them they’re never truly alone, even when life gets hard.
Example:
"You were only 4 when I wrote this, but I already knew you were full of kindness and strength. I hope when you read this on your 18th birthday, you’re chasing dreams without fear — and laughing as loud as you always did."
💍 For a Wedding Day
You can write about your own experiences with love and partnership, what you felt on your wedding day, or the values you hope they carry into marriage. It’s a way to be there, even if you can’t walk them down the aisle.
Example:
"Marriage is two people growing at different speeds, falling out and back in love, building something bigger than themselves. I hope you find someone who makes you feel safe to be completely you."
👶 For a New Baby or First Child
Offer words of encouragement for their journey into parenthood, share what it felt like to hold them as a baby, or pass on the kind of support they may not even know they’ll need yet.
Example:
"You may doubt yourself as a parent — we all do. But you were born to love, and that love will be more than enough. You already carry it inside you."
📚 Life Lessons & Advice
This is a chance to share the truths you've gathered through your life. You might reflect on failure, resilience, kindness, or what it means to live with intention.
Example:
"When life feels too hard, go outside. Breathe. Ask for help. You’re not meant to carry it all alone. You’re already enough, just as you are."
💌 Just Because / Open When…
“Open when” letters are little time capsules for emotional moments. You can write one to be opened when they miss you, when they’re scared, or when they need to remember how loved they are.
Example:
"If you're reading this and the world feels too heavy, I want you to know: you’ve made me proud every single day, just by being you."
✝️ For a Final Goodbye
When words are all you can leave behind, this letter becomes your final gift. You might write about how you want to be remembered, share one last piece of love, or give them the comfort of knowing you’ll always be with them.
Example:
"Please know this isn’t goodbye. It’s just a change in how I show up for you. I’ll still be there — in your smile, in your laugh, in your stubbornness and your dreams."
